Reiki Precautions – Contraindications to Reiki Treatments

3 min read

Most reiki practitioners will tell you that Reiki is safe and gentle for anyone and will never do any harm. However, there are some scenarios where you may want to take precautions before receiving reiki treatments. While there is no direct evidence of contraindications to reiki therapy, it has been suggested that under certain circumstances the restoration of the energy balance within the body can have some adverse effects.

During Chemo or Radiotherapy

When receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy the client should avoid reiki healing. As reiki will help to lessen the side effects of chemo, it will also help the body to eliminate toxins. However, some of those toxins are part of the cancer treatment, and removing them could impact the effectiveness of the cancer treatment.

Clients with Pacemakers

Clients with pacemakers should avoid reiki treatments. Reiki therapy will help the body to stabilize and regulate its functions. While reiki is not an electrical current, it may cause disruption in the pacemakers timing. This is because the internal blockages that are cleared with reiki, may help the heart to regulate itself.

While under Anesthesia

Clients under anesthetic should not receive reiki healing at a distance. During surgery the client may receive a cocktail of drugs that may render the client unconscious and make the procedure painless. However, reiki seeks to restore balance allowing the body to remove impurities like anesthetic drugs. This would put the client at risk of waking during the procedure..

Broken Bones

When bones are broken, a client should not receive reiki treatment until the bone is set. When giving a reiki treatment, the bodys natural healing energies are moved back into balance. This could cause the broken bone to begin healing quickly before the bone has been set properly.

Amputee

A client who has lost a limb or finger should not be treated with reiki before the severed body part is reattached. Again, reiki will quicken the healing process by clearing energy blockages. This in turn may accelerate the bodies natural healing ability before the attachment and this might cause complications.

Epilepsy

Client with epilepsy should avoid reiki therapy as it may trigger a seizure.

Diabetics who inject insulin

Clients who are injecting insulin for diabetes should use caution when getting reiki treatments. The energy balancing that accompanies reiki therapy can impact the blood glucose levels. They should measure their levels after any reiki session and report any significant change to their doctor.

Taking Blood Pressure Medication

Client on blood pressure medication should avoid reiki treatments because the treatment is meant to bring the body back into correct balance. Like diabetes, reiki clients on blood pressure medication should check their blood pressure regularly.

Taking Thyroid Medication

Client taking thyroid or adrenal medication should not be treated with reiki. As these treatments are designed to bring the body back into balance, if you are taking thyroid medication the treatment may interfere with the regulation of  medicine in the body.

Conclusion

As you can see there are a few situations that you should question if reiki therapy is the best for the client. Reiki energy is universal and will always work for the greater good. You should always consult your doctor before beginning a new healthcare regime.
